The scriptures explains about following the Ekadashi vrat is most auspicious and one can be liberated from Birth and Death cycle.
One of the Ekadashi falls on the 11th day of Shukla Paksha in the Hindu month of Magha, which falls in January or February on the Gregorian calendar.

As said, once Chitrasena , a musician of Indralok along with his Son Malyavan visited Indralok Palace. Several Apsaras were performing Dance. 
One of the Apsara name Pushpavati saw Malywan and got attracted to him . Both saw each other and showed great love . This Made kind Indra along with his father angry and cursed them . 
By cursing, they became ghost and fell in the Himalayas in the cold extreme weather.
They were upset by this.  They were also hungry and did not eat anything and fortunately that day was Jaya Ekadashi. Unknowingly they kept fasting on the day of Ekadashi .Lord Krishna was extremely pleased by this and gave them original form.
When both the couples reached Indralok , they narrated the story of Jaya Ekadashi.

The beautiful story highlights that even unknowingly someone keeps fasting of Ekadashi, they will be liberated.

How to observe Bhaimi Jaya Ekadashi:

On the day of the Ekadashi, Devotees Wake up in Brham Muhurat and take a bath.  They sincerely chants the name of Krishna and light a ghee lamp in front of the picture of Lord Krishna. Following the Ekadashi vrat is too simple. 
Further, Devotees can take fruits and Milk as per their capacity.
