*SAPHALA EKADASHI
Timings, Significance,  Associated Story and Benefits of Observing*

(Falling on Thursday,  26th December 2024)

Ekadashi, an important fast observed in Hinduism, holds significant spiritual value. Among the various Ekadashis, Saphala Ekadashi, falling during the Krishna Paksha (waning moon) of the Pausha month (December-January), is particularly revered. The Brahmanda Purana narrates a conversation between King Yudhisthira and Lord Krishna, emphasizing the profound benefits of observing Saphala Ekadashi. It is believed that a single Saphala Ekadashi fast surpasses the merit accrued from performing 1000 Ashvamedha Yagas and 100 Rajasuya Yagas combined.

Tale Associated with Saphala Ekadashi:
The Power of Inadvertent Fasting on Saphala Ekadashi

Prince Lumpaka was a rebellious prince who caused much trouble in his kingdom. He was disrespectful to elders, ignored the teachings of the gods, and even stole from his own people. Due to his unruly behavior, his father, the king, was forced to banish him from the palace. Lumpaka was left to fend for himself in the harsh wilderness.

One day, while wandering through the forest, Lumpaka stumbled upon a sacred tree and decided to rest beneath its shade. Unbeknownst to him, it was Saphala Ekadashi, a day of profound spiritual significance. He spent the entire day fasting, not out of devotion, but simply because he had no food. As the day progressed, he felt a strange sense of peace. To his astonishment, a divine horse appeared before him, and a voice from the heavens instructed him to return to his father. Lumpaka, humbled by this experience, returned to the palace and embraced a life of virtue and service.

This story of Saphala Ekadashi highlights the profound power of even unintentional devotion and the unexpected blessings that can arise from unexpected circumstances.

How to Observe Saphala Ekadashi:

To observe this fast, devotees typically abstain from grains and consume fruits and milk. Offering ghee lamps, incense, and devotional songs to Lord Krishna is considered auspicious.
